Operation Back-To-School is August 15, 2009. Operation Back-To-School was created to address an immediate need in our local community. As summer draws to a close, there are thousands of families struggling to make ends meet. For a lot of these families it is a major financial sacrifice to purchase basic, simple school supplies- pencils, backpacks, paper and notebooks. Through OBTS, you can help lighten the burden on these families by helping to give school supplies to 2000 needy children. Each child that attends OBTS will receive the required supplies for their grade as well as a backpack. Through generous donations from members of the community, these supplies are given to the children free of charge. The success of the program is evident in its growth from serving 246 students our first year to over 1300 students last year. The event is presented in a carnival-like atmosphere with hundreds of volunteers staffing dozens of supplies tables, giving the students smiles and well wishes as they pass. OBTS will celebrate its fifth year in 2009. The program works with eight local elementary schools in the H.E.B. school district, most of which are Title One schools. OBTS is the only program to focus solely on providing supplies and support to needy families and kids. The investment of time and resources we make in them today starting at home, and then moving to school and faith-based community organizations makes a huge impact on the adults they become tomorrow. |
